Darrell McDonald was 10 when he first picked up a racquet at his neighborhood Ridgedale Recreation Center and discovered success as a junior player. After winning several Chattanooga City Championships in his youth he put his racquet down for 20 years and at the age of 44 began a stellar adult career. He won 55 City Closed, 30 State Crowns, and 9 Southern titles. He was ranked #1 in the South with four different doubles partners including Tommy Bartlett, Roger Layne, Bob Helton, and Clive Kileff. He played his first Southern Senior Cup in 1986 and has played and captained ever since. He was also a member of the Southern Team at the National Intersectional Championships . Between 1984 and 2008 Darrell had his name on 24 TVOC trophies.

McDonald has a true love and respect for tennis and in return the game has given him a lifetime of fun and friendship. Darrell has been married to his biggest fan, Marilyn, since 1961 and they have one daughter, Lynne, and one grandson,Gates. The entire family enjoy the game of tennis.
